What If You Couldn’t Fail

Find a comfortable seated position, with a notebook or journal.

Stack your shoulders over your hips. Lengthen your neck so your ears are over your shoulders. Soften your ribs over your pelvis. Soften your bite. Allow your body to take any other fidgets it wants and then find some stillness.

Notice the flow of your breath and encourage it to be softer, slower, and deeper into your body. Just notice your breath and allow it help shift your attention out of your day and into this time for reflection.

As you continue to breathe slowly and deeply, bring your present self to mind. Without judgment or need to categorize anything as good/bad or right/wrong, simply see yourself as you are at this point in your life, on your unique journey. Over the next few breaths, hold this current vision of yourself and perhaps say to yourself “I see you” or “I am here”.

From this vision of your current self, what is a goal, dream, intention, or idea that you have for yourself? It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, how realistic or unrealistic you may think it is. Without overthinking, what is the first one that comes to mind? The thing that bubbles to the surface when everything gets quiet.

Let this idea take up more of your attention. Allow any details to take shape, to form words, or just to fill you with a feeling. Take a few breaths and let any of these details get clearer. Just let them take up space in your mind and in your heart.

From this space of openness, ask yourself:

  • How does this idea make me feel?

  • What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?

  • What is one step I could take in this direction?

Let the answers come in any form: words, pictures, colours, etc.

Take some time to write down your reflections in your notebook.
